    Hiya,

Just a thought I had about PvE content a while back. Would appreciate your thoughts about the concept. Many thanks!

It's understood that, when conquest wars get big, players will naturally float towards one of two sides. While this is great for mixing together players and cities that normally wouldn't get the chance, we've heard some feedback wishing that a third side could be formed to make things more dynamic.

The concept is to implement an artificial "third side" in the form of a non-player faction.

This third party may come in the form of the undead, foreign invaders, an infectious force from the blights of worlds past, the exact form it arrives in doesn't matter so much as that it is a mechanism that can be used to nudge Loka conquest towards a more interactive and dynamic environment. They can lay low during large-scale wars when armies don't need distractions, but arrive in force when the server is at peace, ready to collaborate to repel the baddies.

I think giving the server an ever-looming antagonist with real consequences could be a great element for quests, including boss fights that small parties/the entire server can take on together. Some of the quick thoughts about traits and abilities follow, feel free to add to the list or polish whats already there.

    • Attacking the outskirts of inactive cities (discussed a while back)
    • Building encampments on long-abandoned tiles (barb. camps)
    • Boss Fights/Dungeons
    • Custom-items/mobs
    • World events (ambushes along roads, navy battles, server-wide battles)
It's a pretty short list for now, but I hope the concept is understood. Thanks for the read! -M

This is really reminiscent of the suggestion awhile ago of mobs attacking tgens, I'm a really
big fan of it but it sounds kind of resource intensive.

Really big of this idea though ! Personally would make me want to claim more land as a town. Currently the only reason Athenaeum ever has for claiming land is resources. This would really spice stuff up

I feel like these would end up just being tedious rather than fun. Or it would be fun for about 2 fights then get old. I like server wide or party boss fights / PVE but those should be more like the horseman and wither where you can choose when to fight them or they're just randomly spawning.

Maybe if this were to be a thing, it could add that third side to Balak since it's kind of obvious there never is one. The "undead" or whatever
could randomly attack at some point in your vuln time.

If it is done right it wouldn't only be fun for 2 fights. Unless you have an un-reasonably short attention span, in which case that's kind of your problem?

I disagree on your point about this not becoming stale quickly, what keeps things fresh is the ability for fights and territory claims to be dynamic. Anything that is a coded response/attack will be by design the same over and over, maybe having slight variations in mobs and messages to the player and the like. What largely makes pvp and conquest interesting is the human aspect of it, why 2 groups are fighting, who they can persuade to join them or stay out of a fight. I’d bet you will be hard pressed, if this was implemented, to find somebody who didn’t become bored with doing the same fights over and over again once or twice a week to keep control of their territory.

Well solely for the sake of argument, there's no reason to say there wouldn't be something like 3 different scenarios. An example of this could be holding out until the waves are over, destroying enemy buildings or even just a small boss fight.

Ofc that's a lot of time and resources to invest for a small feature. But, you certainly can change aspects to make it more interesting.

With all this being said I can definitely see validity in the arguement that regardless of the bells and whilstles put into this, it will fall short to some players and there is a lot to be said about how the reason behind towns fighting adding to the overall conquest experience.

I could definitely see this sort of thing feeling grindy if implemented haphazardly. It would take a more in-depth look into how this third force would be implemented and what we're looking for in terms of features.
The concept has a few ways it could go. It could be used as a tool from which staff teams can build a more dynamic environment, which might be a bit less hard-coded and used on occasion, like building quests around an invader. It could also be used for the mechanic Crypt talked about a while back in which outside forces attempt to eat away at the frontiers of inactive towns. Way more hard-coded but a useful tool that can be used to nudge player behavior.
